Historic Battleship Fitted with Comdial Phone System
Comdial Corporation donates to the preservation of the Battleship New Jersey

SARASOTA, FL. – March 5, 2001

The WWII battleship USS New Jersey, enshrined as a memorial and floating museum in Camden, New Jersey, was recently fitted with Comdial’s latest telephone equipment. Telecorp, a New Jersey-based Comdial dealer, handled the delicate task of providing contemporary communications for the historic museum complex. Comdial Corporation (Nasdaq:CMDL), a Florida-based telecommunications company, was proud to earn the contract to participate in the Battleship museum and upon completion of the contracted work made a cash contribution toward the ship’s restoration.

The USS New Jersey is the most decorated battleship in U.S. naval history. The “Big J,” as her veterans and supporters fondly call her, was recently brought home to New Jersey to be converted into a museum and public attraction.

Bringing contemporary phone service to a 60-year-old vessel offered a unique set of challenges for Telecorp. During the weeks-long installation process, they were constantly aware that they were working on a national treasure and had to preserve the integrity of the ship that served the United States so proudly. At the same time, they had to provide the museum staff with the most advanced communications available so they could handle efficiently the needs of visitors, educators, veterans, and staff. Making the task more challenging was the need to handle communications throughout the battleship and integrating it with the land-based visitor center – all without visibly leaving the mark of 21st century technology.

“This was the most unusual and exciting project we’ve ever worked on,” said Tim Jennings of Telecorp. “We always strive to bring our customers the latest communication technologies and to take the fear factor out of trying a new technology. Here, we especially had to reduce any fears among the legions of ‘Big J’ fans that our work wouldn’t interfere with the museum’s core mission of preservation. It was a trust that we took very seriously. And what an honor it was for all of us to walk the decks and pass under those magnificent guns.”

Comdial Corporation was so impressed with the work done by Telecorp in seamlessly integrating their equipment onto the venerable battleship, that they wanted to participate in the continuing preservation effort. Comdial Corporation made a donation toward the restoration effort. In a ceremony on board the battleship, Joe Ragone and Tim Jennings of Telecorp along with Michael Gough, Comdial’s regional sales manager and himself a veteran, presented a donation check to Admiral Seigenthaler, Executive Director of the USS New Jersey refurbishment project.

“One reason we chose Telecorp for our communications system,” said Jack Shaw, director of programs and education for the Battleship New Jersey Museum, “was that we knew this local company shared our vision and respect for the ship. We were so pleased that Comdial, the manufacturer of their products, also wanted to participate in honoring this ship and the accomplishments of the men who served on her. Their kind contribution will help preserve the rich history of the Battleship New Jersey.”

The Battleship New Jersey is berthed on the Delaware River in Camden, NJ, just south of the Aquarium.
